Mentoring Committee Chair, 100 Black Men of America, Inc.
Dr. Murfree was recently selected as the Chief Operations Officer for the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority in Atlanta, Georgia. Murfree is excited about the new position and is looking forward to the challenges associated with the appointment and working closely with the current staff, the Board and the community partnerships. Dr. Murfree formerly served as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Fort Valley State University for approximately 3 years. His plan was to build a comprehensive, competitive and self-sustained Athletics program where student-athletes were placed in the best position to learn, achieve, win and succeed! To learn, achieve, and succeed was summarized in being excellent and graduating from the University. Dr. Murfree served as the 14th Superintendent of Schools in Albany, Georgia and in this role he did not waste any time outlining new directions for the system with the desire to improve community collaborative efforts and parental involvement that led to a reduction in dropouts and improvement in promotion and performance for students. He introduced the need for a Drop-In Academy, A Career and College Readiness Academy, as well as a technological savvy district. Murfree introduced an aggressive charge for mentoring programs across all schools for males in the district and supported the current charter schools. Dr. Murfree’s introduced a plan to open a Virtual School for the district to assist with Home Schooled children and their families. Dr. Murfree started a Pre-K to college program which is still in existence today. Murfree was able to acquire $1,000,000.00 in scholarships from Florida A&M University for deserving students in the STEM areas. Dr. Murfree was recognized as a 2012 nominee for Superintendent of the Year by the Georgia School Superintendent’s Association. Under Dr. Murfree’s leadership the district received its reaffirmation for accreditation under SACS/AdvancED for another ten years. He and his team work diligently to receive both “Race to the Top and School Improvement funding for the District. Dr. Murfree oversaw an overall budget of approximately $280,000,000.00 when including facilities. Dr. Murfree also served as Vice-Chairman for the Board of Control as elected by his Superintendent colleagues for the Southwest Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA). Dr. Murfree is Board Certified in Educational Leadership at the Building and District Levels as well as several psychological and psychotherapeutic disciplines with a background in both Counseling and Clinical Psychology. Dr. Murfree is Board Certified as a Forensic Examiner and a Master’s Addiction Counselor. Dr. Murfree formerly served as the Executive Assistant to the President, Administrative Chief of Staff and Director of Athletics at Albany State University as well as Interim Vice-President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. He also served as Director of the Honors’ Program and Center for the African-American Male. In the realm of academics Dr. Murfree earned the rank of Full Professor with Tenure while at Albany State University. Dr. Murfree served as the National/International Mentoring Chairman of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. for sixteen years. He also served on the Executive Committee for 100 Black Men of America, Inc. as the Vice-Chairman of Programs which oversaw the programmatic areas of Economic Empowerment, Education, Health and Wellness and Mentoring. He was elected as Vice-Chairman of Operations for the organization for two terms. Dr. Murfree has been recognized as the architect of a comprehensive mentoring known as “Mentoring the 100 Way [now Mentoring the 100 Way Across a Lifetime].” Dr. Murfree returns to a familiar post as he was recently appointed as the Chairman of Programs for the 100 Black Men of America which oversees Education, Mentoring, Health and Wellness, Economic Empowerment, Collegiate 100, Dollars and Sense ($ense), African-American History
This training is designed to certify all members in mentoring as well as train potential members (League of Trainers) throughout the organization to train in their respective chapters and regions. The training will cover the History of Mentoring, The Relevance of Mentoring in Today’s Society, The Why in Mentoring, Mentoring the 100 Way Across A Lifetime, Current Research, The Impact of Mentoring, and How to Build Effective Mentoring Programs.
Overview: College students have encountered unique challenges leading to poor mental health in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. Before the pandemic started, one in five college students experienced one or more diagnosable mental disorders worldwide. The fact that the COVID-19 pandemic affects collegiate mental health underscores the urgent need to understand these challenges and concerns. During this session, a panel of experts will discuss the development of courses of action and public health messaging that can better support college students in this crisis.
